Abstract
Introduction: Intensive care units involve the development of harmonious interpersonal processes, especially with the patient's family, due to their situation of vulnerability and uncertainty. To do so, it is essential to have a situational diagnosis that recognizes the needs of nursing professionals and family members, and in this way guide comprehensive actions that promote healthy relationships. Objectives: To describe the quality of interpersonal relationships between nursing professionals and family members of patients in adult intensive care units (ICU). Materials and methods: A quantitative descriptive correlational study was carried out between April and September 2024 in the city of Bogotá. Two valid and reliable scales (NERF-UCI and VRIEF-UCI) were applied, the first to 31 nursing professionals and the second to 51 family members, allowing each relational needs to be measured. The analysis was carried out using descriptive and correlational statistics with the SPSS v.25 software. Results: Nursing professionals identified the lack of training (64.5%), the lack of recognition of the complexity of the nursing role (54.8%) and the lack of time (48.4%) as the least satisfied needs. On the other hand, family members identified the needs of receiving emotional and/or spiritual guidance (84.3%), receiving information about the technology used (74.5%) and the explanation of the discomforts or side effects of procedures performed (70.6%) as the least satisfied needs. On the other hand, significant correlations were found between the needs of nursing professionals and the needs of family members (R≥0.364 sig. ≥0.003). Conclusion: This study allowed us to recognize that the quality of interpersonal relationships in general is good, however, there are unsatisfied needs that can trigger conflicts, so they must be addressed comprehensively.
